Special Annual Summer Birdwalk and Picnic Lunch
8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Julie Hammerstrom will again host this special summer birdwalk and get together at her home at the top of flagstaff Mountain.. A great time to meet and visit with other members. Nesting birds, flycatchers, bluebirds, hummers, chickadees, maybe turkeys and more. Bring your own picnic lunch. Meet at East Boulder Rec Center, west end of parking lot at 8 a,m, sharp to carpool to Julies. Those with walking impairment will enjoy birding around the house and picnic area. Leave from East Boulder Rec Center, west end of main parking lot at 8 a.m. sharp. Bring a snack. Return as close to 1 p.m. as possible. Escape the summer heat and enjoy the birds and wild flowers of Caribou Ranch (with a volunteer naturalist), one of our newest open space properties. We will walk thru beautiful montane forests and meadows seeing what birds that are present and learning about wild flowers as we go. Join us! Grand Valley Hummingbirds & Western Slope Specialties
Joint trip with Denver Field Ornithologists. Visit master Hummingbird banders Steve & Debbie Bouricius at their farm near Palisade for a day with the hummers. Observe birds at flowers, feeders and banding table to work on ID. Tour hummer gardens, search for nests, etc. Visit Coal Canyon for Chukars. Stay Saturday night at Clifton or camp at Island Acres State Park. (SP Pass needed). Peak season for Palisade Peaches. Join Hummingbird expert John Vanderpoel for this special work shop on hummingbird identification at his home at 7:00 p.m. Prepare yourself to identify hummers on the trip the next day Saturday July 28th. August 25th and 26th, 2007
Birding Down The Platte River
This wonderful two day excursion following the North Platte River into eastern Colorado is really special and should be done by all birders. Join Bill Kaempfer and see birds you don't see around the Boulder Valley. Birding the Eastern Plains you might see Cardinals, Lark Buntings, Red-headed and Red bellied Woodpeckers, dry land sparrows shorebirds and if lucky maybe a cuckoo! Must register in advance with the leader and receive further information. Pay $ 20.00 carpool fee upfront to drivers. Bring lunch , snacks and drinks for two days, money for other meals and your motel. Those 18 to 60 need a CO State Wildlife Stamp which you can purchase anywhere hunting or fishing licences are sold. Rabbit Mountain Trails
7:30 a.m. to Noon
Hike several miles on Rabbit Mountain near Lyons to view migrating hawks, dry-land birds and maybe bushtits. Gorgeous views of mountains and plains. Leave 7:30 a.m. from Four Mile Creek Open Space parking area .03 miles west of North Broadway on Lee Hill Road. Return about noon.

  • DIRECTIONS to meeting places:
    *Walden Wildlife Habitat - off North 75th Street between Valmont and Jay roads. Meet at Cottonwood Marsh parking area.
    **East Boulder Recreation Center - 5660 Sioux Drive. Take 55th Street from either Baseline or South Boulder Road, Meet at west end of main parking lot.
    ***SAVERS parking lot at Table Mesa Shopping Ceneter off Broadway 1/4 block south of intersection of Table Mesa and Broadway.
  • CARPOOLING ON TRIPS: We would like to ask that all participants pay their carpooling fee up front to driver at the beginning of the trip. Many times at the end of trip we forget and hopefully this will help as gas continues to get more expensive. Please be prepared with the exact amount, and don't wait for driver to ask you for it. JUST DO IT. Thanks.
  • ON ALL OUR FIELD TRIPS: Always sign the trip sign-up sheet, bring water & a snack, binocular, hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, wear a hat and closed toe shoes. Be prepared for the weather. West Nile is still out there! Carpooling in city limits 1.00 , county-wide 2.00 or as listed to drivers. Call the leader if you need more information. Be prepared.
