Sunday April 1, 2007
First Sunday Birding at Walden Ponds
9:00 a.m. to Noon
Meet at the Cottonwood Marsh at Walden Wildlife Habitat at 9:00 AM for shorebirds, ducks and other waterfowl and then we will explore the woods, meadows and creek areas for Spring arrivals. Bring binoculars, scope, snack, water, shotgun (April Fools!). Weather can be highly variable in early April, so dress accordingly. Everyone is welcome and beginners and experts alike will learn tips on identifying birds. First Sunday Birding is hosted by Peter Plage (303 666 9827) and co-led by other fine birders in our club as needed. Walden Ponds is mostly an accessible area.

Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch
7:30 a.m. to Noonish
Meet at the East Boulder Rec Center at the west end of the parking lot and bird until noon, possibly later if it is one of those awesome days up there. Bring binoculars, water, snack and wear boots for the climb to the ridge, bring sunscreen and a hat for the sun and a coat for a shower. A Hawk guidebook can be useful. See and identify migrating raptors as the fly past the ridge at Morrison Hogback. This can be a rewarding experience with a great number of birds flying near. If weather is inclement trip leader may call a rainout. Carpool fee is $2.00. The trip leader is Dianna Johnston (303 682 5662).

A Blue Flutters Walk, Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Blue butterflies
9:00 a.m. to early afternoon
Spring Azures and Silvery Blues fly at the Cal-Wood Education Center, Jamestown, at this time (unless snow flies again and again.) Moisture will bring the spring blossoms and insects - plenty to eat for the bluebirds. Bring a butterfly guide if you have one, binoculars, sun and rain protection, lunch and water. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Safeway Store, north parking lot Iris and 28th Street to carpool ($2.00 each). The drive is about 50 minutes each way. Cal-Wood is a 1,000 acre montane meadow and ponderosa pine forest which is preserved with a Conservation Easement, so it is isolated, unique and protected. Young people are welcome. Lower Latham and Beebe Draw
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Seek out early shorebirds, waders and burrowing owls on this all day carpooling trip. Meet at 8 a.m. at Cottonwood Marsh at Walden Ponds for a look-see before carpooling off and birding until about 4:00 p.m. Visit the lakes, ponds, and rivers on the way north to Lower Latham and Beebe Draw. Dress for variable (maybe cold) weather, bring lunch, water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, bug repellant, scopes and radios. Carpool fee $3.00 to drivers. Leader: Dick Pratt 303-651-6860.

Leaders will take small groups and cover the various habitats for sightings of usually over 50 species! Bring binoculars, field guide, snack and water. Be prepared for changing weather. Birders of all levels are most welcome and there is no fee. Hosted by Peter Plage and ably assisted by several regular experts from our group.

International Migratory Bird Day

The Wild Bird Center, Boulder Bird Club, and Boulder County Audubon will be hosting International Migratory Bird Day at Walden Ponds on Saturday, May 12, 2007. This year's theme is "Birds in a Changing Climate." There will be information on the conservation of wild birds as well as a Dawn Chorus Walk, A Big Sit, and other walks. The dawn chorus will begin at 5:30am and the general events are scheduled from 7:30am 'til 11:00am. Note: Please carpool to Walden Ponds as there is limited parking. Illegally parked cars may be ticketed.

Birding the Parks and Hills of Lyons
8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Look for nesting species such as bluebirds, swallows, wrens, and warblers, as well as watching for hawks and dippers. We might even find an owl or two! Meet at Lyons Park N Ride at 4th and Main Streets. Always a favorite trip with a great host. Bring water, snacks and all the usual. Leader Ray Davis 303-823-5332.

Birding in the Estes Park Area
7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This midweek trip will be a good chance to visit the high country for Woodpeckers, Warblers and other spring migrants with an excellent guide and in a smaller group. Our leader is well versed in the birds of this area and knows where to find some unusual ones. We will visit some natural migrant traps and explore some of his favorite habitats. Meet at the Visitors Center parking lot across from McDonalds on Highway 34 at 8:30 AM. Persons wishing to Carpool ($3.00) should meet by 7:30 AM in the north end of the Safeway Parking lot at 28th and Iris. Moderate hiking in changing weather conditions. An Evening Trip To Find Poorwill in the Foothills
8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Go bird watching at dark! Meet at 8 p.m. sharp at the Four Mile Creek Open Space parking lot, 0.3 mile west of north Broadway on Lee Hill Road. Bring flashlights, binocular, bug juice and jackets in case it gets cold. Find the elusive Common Poorwill and see Common Nighthawks. Car pool fee $1.00 each to drivers. Return around 9:30 or so. The Birds of the Pawnee Grasslands
6:00 a.m. to around 6:00 p.m.
Join master birder Bill Kaemper for his notable annual trip to the Pawnee. He is able to find those elusive grasslands birds such as Mountain Plovers, Longspurs, Burrowing Owls, Orchard Orioles and Nighthawks. Return home via Lower Latham for shorebirds. Meet at 6 a.m. sharp to form car pools at the Niwot Park N Ride at Co 119 and Niwot Road. Return around 6 p.m. Car pool fee is $10.00 each to drivers up front. A full day so be prepared with lots to drink, snacks, lunch, hat, bug repellant, sun screen and binocular. Scope and radios if you have them. A great trip that every birder needs to take and it will be far superior than if you try to find these birds yourself. Sign up in advance with Bill. Join us June 8-11 in Craig, Colorado for the 2007 Convention. Victor Emanuel, founder of VENT, is our keynote speaker and will talk about "The Ten Best Places to Bird in the World." Victor started birding in Texas 58 years ago and his travels have taken him to all the continents. Of course the Convention will also offer great field trips. Reserve your room early! Annual Bob O Link Search
7:30 a.m. to around 10:30 a.m.
Bob O Link is a Boulder Valley specialty and you don't want to miss seeing these special birds! Meet at 7:30 a.m. sharp at the south end of Old Tale Road (off of Arapahoe Rd just west of Cherryvale). Please be careful not to block driveways. Walk the trails quietly to spot Bob O Links in the tall grasses and then drive to Dry Creek Trailhead. Bring binocular, scope, bug juice, water & snack, hat etc. Bird until about 10:30 a.m. An easy walk on easy trails and an easy way to spot an elusive bird. Leader: Debra Sparn 303-494-0919.

Meet at 7 a.m. at the east Boulder Rec Center, west end of main parking lot to car pool to Golden Gate State Park. Return around 1 p.m. One of the gems of our local State Parks system and loaded with breeding birds. See the birds, learn their calls and see the nests with a leader who "knows all the sounds". Car pool fee $2.00 to drivers up front. Drivers need State Park pass or pay daily fee from car pool fees. Bring lunch, be prepared for weather, binoculars, hats, bug juice. North Park Trip with DFO
This trip is still being planned and will be finalized soon. The dates may change! Please Join the Denver Field Ornithologists for a 3 day trip to North Park in the first week of July.   • DIRECTIONS to meeting places:
    *Walden Wildlife Habitat - off North 75th Street between Valmont and Jay roads. Meet at Cottonwood Marsh parking area.
    **East Boulder Recreation Center - 5660 Sioux Drive. Take 55th Street from either Baseline or South Boulder Road, Meet at west end of main parking lot.
    ***SAVERS parking lot at Table Mesa Shopping Ceneter off Broadway 1/4 block south of intersection of Table Mesa and Broadway.
  • CARPOOLING ON TRIPS: We would like to ask that all participants pay their carpooling fee up front to driver at the beginning of the trip. Many times at the end of trip we forget and hopefully this will help as gas continues to get more expensive. Please be prepared with the exact amount, and don't wait for driver to ask you for it. JUST DO IT. Thanks.
